"Of Bygone Days" [EP] by Piano Black

Piano Black

In the heart of Dublin, Piano Black emerges as the sole symphonic metal force in the Republic of Ireland. Led by the guitarist Mario Stojcic and the soprano Ana Marija Dundovic, the band's EP, "Of Bygone Days," serves as a powerful prelude to what promises to be an exhilarating 2024 with the release of their full-length album.

The EP, recorded in the midst of the pandemic, reflects the resilience and creativity of the band. Facing challenges of restricted travel and limited band members, Ana Marija Dundovic and Mario Stojcic pressed on, crafting an intricate tapestry of symphonic metal that defies the circumstances it was born from. The recording process, spread across weekends whenever cross-county travel was permitted, witnessed the duo collaborating with session members for drums and bass and even doubling up for choir vocals.

The opening track, "Northern Sons," introduces listeners to Piano Black's penchant for drawing inspiration from the natural world and mythology. Drawing from Nordic mythology, the song pays homage to the brave Norns who shaped their own destinies, reflecting the band's determination to forge a unique musical path.

"Beside the Fire" is a poetic rendition of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, sung by Bilbo Baggins in Rivendell. It encapsulates the ephemeral nature of life, reminding us that as we age, some adventures become unreachable, and a new era will dawn that we will never witness. The track weaves a poignant narrative that resonates beyond the boundaries of Middle-earth.

"Elements" and "Beneath Another Sky" invite the listener on a journey, mirroring the experiences of a touring musician waking up to new scenery every day and exploring uncharted territories. The songs capture the essence of wanderlust and the thrill of the unknown, a theme that resonates strongly with those who live life on the road.

The EP was mixed by producer Ben Wanders in Limerick, with the final touch of mastering done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios, Finland. The collaboration adds a layer of depth to the EP, enhancing the symphonic elements and ensuring a crisp, powerful sound.

"Of Bygone Days" stands as a testament to Piano Black's ability to overcome obstacles and create captivating symphonic metal. The EP serves as a prelude to a promising chapter in the band's journey, and a busy year ahead. The band have numerous live performances in Ireland and the UK including Metal 2 the Masses in Ireland and are working on their forthcoming full-length album, produced in collaboration with a renowned German metal music producer.
