MYRKUR's Evolution with New Album 'Spine'

In the realm of music, there are artists who constantly push the boundaries, redefining their sound and identity. One such artist is MYRKUR, the enigmatic composer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Amalie Bruun. Today, we delve into the exciting new chapter of her personal story as she introduces us to her upcoming album, 'Spine.' This release marks a significant juncture for MYRKUR, as it chronicles the transformative experiences in Bruun's life, particularly the birth of her child, while breaking free from the confines of musical genres.
'Spine' serves as a canvas on which MYRKUR paints her emotions, allowing listeners to journey alongside her through life's ups and downs. Collaborating once again with producer Randall Dunn, Bruun found inspiration in the serene surroundings of Sigur Rós’s Icelandic Sundlaugin studio. Here, the album's themes came to life, weaving a delicate balance between the profound connection of mother and child and the backdrop of an increasingly fragmented world. This backdrop includes everything from the isolating effects of the pandemic to the rise of Artificial Intelligence, which Bruun masterfully incorporates into the album's narrative.
Despite the tumultuous external environment that influenced 'Spine,' MYRKUR's music has never been more inviting and open. Bruun's vocals, with their crystalline clarity, become a conduit for a plethora of emotions. The album becomes a harmonious blend of bliss, anxiety, grief, intimacy, and a yearning for exploration. These emotions are skillfully woven into an intricate tapestry of sound, reflecting Bruun's diverse musical background in ways that are both familiar and entirely novel.
As a preview of what 'Spine' holds, the lead single "Like Humans" has been unveiled. The track presents a mesmeriSing fusion of ethereal textures and an intense, rhythmic undercurrent that keeps the listener engaged throughout. Bruun's voice soars above this intricate soundscape, as if beckoning from a realm beyond. Speaking about the single, she shares, "When I wrote 'Like Humans,' I felt very disconnected and isolated from the human race. The lack of touch and being in the first few years of motherhood forced me to become human in a way I never thought I would. Going through all of these changes at once made me desperately want to feel a connection with the earth and humans. Writing and recording this album helped me heal and succeed with that dream."
MYRKUR's artistic evolution has been anything but linear. With three studio albums, two EPs, and a theatrical score under her belt, Bruun has consistently challenged conventions, exploring the depths of her Danish folk roots and black metal influences. From the emotional currents of 'M' (2015) to the haunting 'Mareridt' (2017) and the folk-inspired 'Folkesange' (2020), MYRKUR's music has continually evolved while staying true to her unique identity.
'Spine' embodies a multitude of meanings – strength, growth, resilience, and the core of our being. Much like the spine supports our bodies and enables us to rebuild, the album represents a metaphorical rebirth. It masterfully balances the light and dark facets of life, inviting listeners to embark on an introspective journey through sound.
